|Johny Preston Vernon, long time resident of Spearman, TX, went to be with his heavenly Father on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the age of 86. He passed away in Dallas, TX. He was born March 31, 1926 in Roy, NM, to Jack and Lora Ellen Vernon. He grew up with three older brothers, and two sisters who all preceded him in death. He was a 1943 graduate of Spearman High School and attended college at West Texas State in Canyon, TX. J.P. (Peter) Vernon enlisted in the Navy on August 12th, 1943. He served on the USS Tuna, USS Silversides, and was stationed with the Submarine Squadron 45 during World War II. J.P. Vernon received the Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific 2 Stars, and the Submarine Combat Pin 1 Star before he was honorably discharged on December 14, 1945. On November 9, 1946 he wed Betty Jo Pierce in Spearman, TX, and she preceded him in death in October 2, 2011. They raised their five children in Spearman. Peter did carpentry work in their early years of marriage as well as farming for many years. In 1957, Peter became a Veterans County Service Officer and served for 23 years. J.P. (Peter) Vernon also served as the Justice of the Peace in Hansford County from January 1958 to December 1990 before moving to Winters, TX, in 1995. In 2005, Betty and Peter went to live close to their daughters in Kingwood, TX. After Bettyís death, Peter moved to Dallas to live close to his son and his family.
Peter enjoyed watching his kids show at Livestock Shows as they were growing up. He played golf and tennis in his spare time. His favorite pastime was woodworking and carpentry work. As a matter of fact, the first house he and Betty Jo lived in was built by his own hands. He also loved to build things for his children. Many of his woodworking accomplishments reside in their homes still today.
Peter is survived by his daughter Johny Roach and husband John of Kingwood, TX; Bonnie Jackson and husband Mark of Huffman, TX; Scott Vernon and wife Molly of League City, TX; Connie Bridges and husband Jimmy of Odessa, TX; and Tracy Vernon and wife Sharyn of Nevada, TX. His surviving grandchildren are Dr. Greg Roach and wife Renee, Chris Roach, Courtney Moore and husband Brady, Mandy Jackson, August Vernon and wife Sara, Austin Vernon, Blake Bridges and wife Lindi, Brady Bridges and his wife Genesis, Bailey Bridges, and Jack Allen Vernon. His great grandchildren are Parker and Pryce Roach, Liv Harlow Moore, Parker and Drew Vernon, Ava Vernon, and Braydon, Bryli, and Brogan Bridges.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Boxwell Brotherís Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held following the viewing at 11:00 a.m. at Holt Cemetery in Spearman, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the Veteranís Administration.
