Carol Joan Short, 88, of Spearman, passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, just three days before her 89th birthday.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16, and from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home in Spearman, Texas. The burial and graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Hansford Cemetery in Spearman, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Spearman, Texas. Services are under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, Inc., of Spearman, Texas, with Rev. John Scott officiating.

Carol was born on October 17, 1937, in Gage, Oklahoma, to Charlie and Helen Harbour. She was raised in Gage and graduated from Gage High School in 1955. She often talked about her basketball career during her high school years.

Carol began raising her family shortly after graduation and had the opportunity to travel to many places, including Paris, before moving her family to Spearman, Texas, in 1971.

Carol worked for Farm Bureau Insurance for 30 years as an office secretary. She was always the first to greet customers and had a way of making “paying the bill a lot easier.”

Carol attended Cornerstone Methodist Church for many years. Many people may not have known about her hidden musical talent: she could play both the piano and organ by ear. However, one thing many people did know about Carol was how much she loved to cook and sew. She made each of her daughters and grandchildren individual, hand-sewn, elaborate Christmas stockings that they all treasure.

Carol, known as “Granny” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, loved playing card games and watching Wheel of Fortune. She also had the BEST bbq weinies and scrambled eggs as she was always cooking and making sure the grandchildren were spoiled.

Carol is survived by her three daughters: Cathy Brown (husband Doug) of Spearman, Lori Scroggs of Amarillo, and Patti Schnell (husband Mike) of Spearman.

She is also survived by five grandchildren: Brace Scroggs, Jessica Brown, Amy D’Zamko, Tyler Schnell, and Ryan Schnell; and nine great-grandchildren: Boston Scroggs; Emma, Kaiden, Kolton, and Everly D’Zamko; Blake, Logan, and Nathan Schnell; and Rein Schnell.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Helen Harbour; her two sisters, Shirley Smith and Betty Mitchell; and her brother, Butch Harbour.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hansford Hospice, 712 Roland, Spearman, TX 79081; and/or the Empty Stocking Fund at Hansford Manor, 707 Roland, Spearman, TX 79081.
