Larry graduated from Perryton High School in 1968. He met the love of his life, Joyce Richburg, at West Texas State University, and they married on June 12, 1971. Following graduation, they took over the Smith family farm and ranch operation in Ochiltree County. Larry was always known as someone that helped others and never missed an opportunity to "pay it forward". He had a soft spot for those who served in the military and never failed to say "Thank you for your service" and pay for a meal for a veteran. He had a love for music. He was a member of the Wesleyan Choir at FUMC and enjoyed singing with his grandkids. Larry never met a stranger and was always known for his kindness. He enjoyed many weekends at the Perryton Club playing tennis with his buddies and playing in a men's basketball league. A few of his favorite things included eating breakfast at The Smokehouse with his round table friends, early mornings, nature and it's beauty, his farm dog, Zoe, funny quotes and jokes, pictures, frozen fruit, quick naps, music and going to all of his grandkids activities. Most people will remember Larry for his beautiful sunrise and sunset pictures. He could truly capture the beauty and glory of God's creations in these pictures. Larry enjoyed going on trips with his family and friends, and especially loved his annual visit to the mountains in Lake City, Colorado.
Larry was a director for the Ochiltree Soil and Water Conservation District for over 30 years, and he worked many years with the Ochiltree County Livestock Show serving as Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. He served on the Perryton Activity Center board and coached several youth league basketball teams. He also served on the Perryton Chamber of Commerce board and was a Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Texas. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, and throughout the years, he was a member and chairperson of many church committees.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce. His beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of his children: Misty Dollar (husband Brad), Brenna Vela (husband Noon), Chandra Bailey (husband Jonathan), and Kade Smith (wife Erin). His greatest legacy lies within his 12 grandchildren, who all adored their Pappy: Kendall, Maddie, and Hadley Dollar, Kynleigh, Morgyn, Kason, and Mallee Vela, Karter, Kamryn, and Kateyn Bailey, and Kolter and Kennedi Smith.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and May Lee Smith, his brother, Gary Smith, and sister, Connie Weis.
The family requests that memorials be sent to Pathways Scholarship Program, PO Box 179, Perryton, TX 79070 or First United Methodist Church, PO Box 987, Perryton, TX 79070.
