Richard Lynn Ooley was born February 13,1943 to Hershel Ooley and Mary Dougherty Ooley in Spearman, Texas. Richard married Reba Hale on March 17, 1964, in Spearman. When they said “I do” they did and through the good times and their struggles they stayed married and devoted to each other for 62 years.
At the age of 5 he was stricken with polio. Even though he was physically limited, he never used that as an excuse to not try and provide for his family. Although he was on crutches and had to wear leg braces, as a young man, Richard drove cattle trucks, grain trucks and water trucks. Before trucks were equipped with automatic transmissions he figured out how to engage the clutch, shift gears and maintain control by using a stick and his hands. After using crutches for so long his arms and shoulders began to be worn out, he continued to help Reba provide by working on small engines, mowing and doing woodwork. He was a master at adapting and not giving up.
He and Reba had two children, Sonya and Justin. After they were married, they gave him 4 grandchildren, he discovered his ultimate joy.
He spent countless hours teaching Sonya’s boys to hunt and fish, as well as watching them play baseball and rope and ride broncs. He loved to watch Justin’s girls participate in the many athletics they were involved in.
In the past three years Richard was blessed with 4 great greatgrandchildren who he always loved and looked forward to seeing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hershel and Mary Ooley, brother, Jimmy, a sister Edith Cage and brother Pat.
He is survived by his wife Reba, daughter Sonya and husband Hadley Reed, son Justin Ooley and wife Jennifer, 2 grandsons, Audy and wife Holly, J.D. and wife Baylee, 2 granddaughters, Addison and fiance Eathan Laymen and Kambrea, 4 great-grandchildren, Lucy, Grady, Ace and Cedar Grace. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Hershelene Turner of Sunray, and Marilee Bulls and husband Bobby of Amarillo and many loved nieces and nephews.
Special thank you to the Dr.’s and nurses who cared for him so lovingly in his last days.
Richard requested Memorials be sent to Scottish Rite Hospital for crippled children in Dallas, Texas or Hansford Hospice 707 S Roland Spearman, TX.
