Wavelyn Cates, 95, of Booker, Texas passed away on January 25, 2023 in Booker.  Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Heart Cemetery in Booker with Rev. Marlon Sparks officiating.  Viewing/visitation will be Friday (1/27/23), 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Saturday (1/28/23), 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Chapel in Booker, Texas. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton, Texas.

Wavelyn Alene Snowbarger was born December 16, 1927 in Sylvia, Kansas to Wesley and Blanche (Rothrock) Snowbarger. In 1933, her family moved to Logan County, KS near Leoti.  After high school, she obtained her teaching degree from Bethany-Peniel College (now Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma) in 1946.  She taught for two years with her sister Marieta prior to meeting her husband, Carl.  She married Carl Ruben Cates on August 31, 1949 in Wichita County, KS. They farmed and ranched for many years in Beaver County, OK and moved to Perryton in 1996.  She was an active, devoted member of the Victory Family Church.

She is survived by her sister, Eulela Goerlitz of Winterhaven, Florida; grandchildren Jon Cornell of Salt Lake City, UT, Candace Kristensson of Denver, CO and Mark Kinsey of Beaver County, OK, and four great-grandchildren.

Wavelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; siblings Darrel Snowbarger, Marieta Cates, Darlene Mathers; and daughters, Beverly Ann Kinsey and Norma Lee Cornell.

Wavelyn had a deep love of scripture and sequins.  Her granddaughter remembers fondly the colorful, glittery bible lessons they shared.  Wavelyn's devotion to Jesus Christ is undying.
